The Ripple Effect of PTSD featuring Bek Houghton and Michael Harding (Melzer, 2016)

In 2010, Australian veteran Michael Harding was involved in the Battle of Derapet during his deployment to Afghanistan, a firefight that lasted three and a half hours in which a section mate, Jared, was shot and killed. Days later, Michael presented to the doctor with involuntary full body muscular twitches and was subsequently diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Upon returning home Michael commenced the gold standard treatment for PTSD however it was making him feel worse on a daily basis. Michael drank heavily to overcome the zombie feeling from the medication and as a result became an alcoholic.

Bek is Michael’s loving carer, she decided that she had to do something to help Michael which led to her researching the symptoms of PTSD. Bek found alternative therapies to help improve Michael’s PTSD symptoms which improved the quality of their lives and saved their relationship. Bek and Michael are advocates of multiple holistic modalities, such as, nutrition, medicinal cannabis, float therapy and yoga. Bek and Michael are passionate about sharing their message of alternative therapies for mental health conditions and ‘to help yourself because you are so deserving'.
